PhD student in Biomedical Computing

Simula Research Laboratory AS

Simula Research Laboratory AS is a publicly owned research institute located outside Oslo, Norway. It is a multi-cultural organization, employing about 150 individuals from 30 countries. Simula is conducting ICT research in the fields of communication technology, scientific computing and software engineering. Simula's main objective is to generate new understanding and create vital knowledge about fundamental scientific challenges that are of genuine value for society. This is achieved through high quality research, education of graduate students, industry collaboration, technology transfer and commercialisation.

PhD student in Biomedical Computing

Project Description
The Biomedical Computing Department performs multi-disciplinary research, driven by medical challenges with teams of experts in physical modeling, mathematics, numerical methods, scientific software development, bioengineering, medical research, and clinical treatment. The department is a driving force behind the development of the FEniCS Project (, a collaborative project for the development of innovative concepts and tools for automated scientific computing, with a particular focus on automated solution of differential equations by finite element methods.

Technological advances, such as in physical measurements, computer simulations, and storage capabilities led to vast amounts of often highly complex data sets, and this continues to grow rapidly. Despite substantial efforts to develop tools for complex data analysis, in many cases our understanding on how to extract useful information and predictive models still remains rather limited.

Motivated by the increased demand of robust predictive methods, this project aims to develop analysis techniques and numerical methods to explore new applications in tractable and robust automatic learning of functions and data structures in high dimension from the minimal number of observed samples. The performance and robustness of the constructed algorithms will be demonstrated in a variety of experiments and numerical tests with real and synthetic data. In particular, the methods will be applied to several problems in computational biomedicine, such as in cardiac modeling, and in bioinformatics, such as gene expressions.

The three-year project, funded by the Research Council of Norway as part of the FRINATEK-IKTPLUSS programs, will be conducted under the supervision of Dr. Valeriya Naumova and Prof. Dr. Are Magnus Bruaset, in closed collaboration with the research groups at Technical University Munich (Prof. Dr. M. Fornasier), Duke University (Prof. Dr. M. Maggioni), University College London (Prof. Dr. M. Pontil), University of Innsbruck (Dr. K. Schnass), and Norwegian University of Science and Technology (Assoc. Prof. Dr. M. Grasmair).

We are seeking a 3-year full time PhD student at Simula Research Laboratory to work on tractable and robust automatic learning of data structures in high dimensions from the minimal amount of observed information. The successful candidate will perform rigorous theoretical analysis and develop numerical methods for learning complex manifolds. These techniques will then be applied to address real-life problems in cardiac modeling.

Your Profile
We consider interested candidates who have concluded their Master studies in Mathematics and/or Computer Science, also from pure subjects, with best marks, and a strong background in one or more of the following fields

Mathematical analysis, functional analysis, approximation theory, probability theory, optimisation, machine learning, and familiarity with programming in Matlab, Mathematica or Python.

The candidate will also have to demonstrate an excellent level of spoken and written English, possess good interpersonal skills and show willingness to work as part of an international team.

Simula Offers
A highly dynamic and motivated team of international researchers and engineers.
Offices are a 15-minute drive or short boat trip from the centre of Oslo.
An informal and inclusive international working environment.
Professional courses and workshops led by international experts on topics such as Communication of Scientific Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and Writing Effective Research Proposals.
A competitive salary.

Simula strives to achieve a good balance between male and female employees, and women are particularly encouraged to apply

Application Requirements
Candidates are invited to apply, by electronically submitting a motivation letter, curriculum vitae et studiorum, including a copy of the Master thesis and 2 letters of recommendation (one from the Master thesis supervisor). Note that all attachments MUST be submitted in PDF format. To avoid misplacement, please make sure to include your first and last name in the filenames of all documents that you send us.

The starting date is at the earliest convenience (negotiable), but indicatively not later than May 1, 2016. Application deadline: April 15, 2016, or until filled. This advertisement will remain online until the position is filled.

We are interested in how you first came to learn about this position - please let us know in your cover letter.

Enquiries regarding the position and the applications should be directed to Dr. Valeriya Naumova (
