Unemployment by gender
The unemployment by men was 0,9% in December and 1,5% by women.
Unemployment by region
The most unemployment was 3% in the Reykjanesregion but only 0,6% in West Iceland, as well as in the Westfjords and East Iceland.
Unemployment by age
In December 2006 there were 17% of all unemployed in the age 16-24 year, or 356 but 522 in December 2005. In 2006 as an average 18% of all unemployed were in the age 16-24. In 2005 the average number was 21% of all unemployed so unemployment of young people has decreased considerable.
Unemployment by length
In December 2006 there were 566 unemployed without a job for a period longer than 6 months or 27% but 23% or 606 in December 2005. In 2006 as an average 27% of all unemployed had been without a job for a longer period than 6 months but 30% in 2005 and 31% in 2004.
There was a continuing decline of open vacancies in December 2006 or 218 in the end of December 2006 but 289 in the end of November 2006. In the end of December 2005 there were 573 open vacancies.
Granted work permits
In December 2006 there were issued 48 new temporary work permits, 502 new registrations from the new EU states and 719 were registrated through temporary work agencies.
In 2006 about 7.660 foreign citizens have been registrated in the Icelandic labour market and other 3.800 are expected to bee in the Icelandic labour market but have not yet received id-number.
The unemployment forecast for January 2007
The unemployment situation usually becomes worse in January due to seasonal reasons. It is expected that unemployment will be in the interval 1-1,4% in January 2007
