Record breaking EURES IS job fair in Reykjavik
Over 2500 people attended EUERS IS jobfair held in Reykjavik City Hall on 21st and 22nd of November. Never before have so many people attended an EURES event in Iceland and attendances went far beyond expectations.
Eures advisers from Norway, Denmark. Austria, Germany, Lithuania, Poland, Belgium and Holland were present to give general information about job opportunities, living- and working conditions in their countries. 10 companies and employment agencies from four countries sent their representatives to the fair to look for promising candidates. They all agreed that the applications and CVs they received at the fair were of high quality, some were even hired right on the spot.
Since the financial crisis in Iceland struck a few weeks ago a growing number of people have started to seek job-opportunities in other countries. According to a recent poll one third of the Icelandic populatio has considered moving abroad because of the current situation. Consequently a job fair like this is a good venue for people who are contemplating seeking a new career in a new country.
Eures started organizing the event in September as some reductions in the construction sector were forseen and the intention was to focus especially on foreign workers as they make up a considerable part of the constuction sector‘s labour force. In October and the first half of November the labour market situation changed dramatically due to before mentioned financial crisis and therefore the scope of the fair widened. Jobseekers of all ages, both foreign and Icelandic, attended the jobfair and people seemed very pleased with the event.
In the view of this success EURES IS plans to hold another jobfair, hopefully as soon as February/March next year and then again in the spring and next fall.
