Reconciliation of work and famili life - Transnational report

Directorate of labour has been participating in a EU sponsored project on reconciliation of work and family life. The closing meeting and final conference was organised by the directorate and was held in the beginning of October. Research was done in five participating countries, Malta, Cyprus, Slovenia, Sweden and Iceland. The research was a combination of primary and secondary research, further, companies spokesmen were interviewed to gain deeper understanding of the issues at hand. Suggestions for change were drawn from the conclusions and made known in the conference.

The Icelandic main findings are as fallows:

Conclusion:
• Reconciliation in Iceland seems to be informal
• Company policies are general and non specific
• WLB requests dealt with on individual bases

- Prejudice - or lack of knowledge/ awareness

Suggestions:
Possible new role for PES
• To raise awareness of overall benefits of WLB and Lead with good example
• Program of awards for companies that implement WLB
• To instigate steps towards Work-Life-School reconciliation

Regulatory framework
• Reviewing the law on parental leave
• And laws on rights to care for family members
• Shortening of the work week
• Gender quotas for company boards
