Postdoctoral fellowship in the area of Ionic Liquids for Biorefining and Catalysis (BilCat)

Umeå University - with its 33,000 students and over 4,000 employees - is an organisation in constant change and development. Umeå University conducts groundbreaking research within several areas - several in which we are among the best in the world - within others regarded as the leaders in Sweden. We are one of Sweden’s largest providers of education and offer a broad and attractive range of courses and programmes. Our campus constitutes an inspiring environment for everyone that studies and works here. We wish to co-operate with companies and organisations throughout the Umeå region and all over the world.

Technical chemistry (TC) is one of the laboratories within the Department of Chemistry  and carries out research and post-graduate researcher education within the areas of sustainable chemical technology, reaction kinetics, catalysis (especially heterogeneous metal and enzymatic catalysis), modeling of chemical reactors, biorefining (particularly forest biorefinery) and process biotechnology. In addition, synthesis and applications of novel ionic liquids applied in biorefineries, and catalytic applications in particular, is an active research area.
We are part of the chemistry platform at the Umeå University and can provide education in industrial reactors, reaction kinetics, biotechnology, green chemistry and various aspects around sustainable development for the students.

We now seek into our group
a postdoctoral researcher who is interested to take part in the development of Sustainable Chemical Processes for the future, with the focus on bio-based fuels and chemicals as well as process concepts within the biorefineriers. The project is expected to contribute significantly to the development of novel green materials, NextGen fuels as well as sustainable chemicals for the future chemical industry  moving towards greener industrial processes.

Applicants should posses a doctoral degree (Dr.Sc. or equivalent), preferably not more than three years old, within chemical engineering, chemical technology, chemistry or alike and possess a deep understanding within the fields of ionic liquids, chemical technology, heterogeneous catalysis and kinetics, as well as expertise and
practical experience in the synthesis, characterization and use of room-temperature ionic liquids. It is a bonus if the candidate also has know-how about heterogeneous catalytic materials, membrane technologies and chemical engineering. Experience in the operation and laboratory practice of high pressure equipment (autoclaves etc.), corrosive substances, HPLC, GC-MS, NMR and other chemical and physical analysis and characterization methods is meritorious.

We also demand a documented capability of autonomous scientific research work and skills in writing scientific publications and reports in English. In addition, the postdoctoral researcher is expected to participate in other current research projects within the research group and a willingness to develop research funding possibilities within the research group is encouraged. Very good command of the English language, both written and spoken, is required.

The position will be based on a stipend for a duration of two (2) years.

Your application should contain a cover letter summarizing your research interests and motives to why you are interested in this particular position. It should also include: (1) a curriculum vitae, (2) a publication list, (3) transcripts of examination certificates, and (4) names and contacts of 1-3 references. The application should not include separate articles or theses.
